A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apple he grew.One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it.The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home he did not know where to plant it.He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his field, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit.Finally he planted the tree in his wood where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died.Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place."What's the difference?" the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted the tree in one of my field, my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit.""Yes," said the friend, "but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have robbed everyone of the fruit, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree!"

o! how much more doth beauty beauteous seem

by that sweet ornament which truth doth give.

the rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem

for that sweet odour, which doth in it live.

the canker blooms have full as deep a dye

as the perfumed tincture of the roses,

hang on such thorns, and play as wantonly

when summer's breath their masked buds discloses:

Lake of Autumn

I remember quite clearly now when the story happened. The autumn leaves were floating in measure down to the ground, recovering the lake, where we used to swim like children, under the sun was there to shire. That time we used to be happy. Well, I thought we were. But the truth was that you had been longing to leave me, not daring to tell me. On that precious night, watching the lake, vaguely conscious. You said:" our story is ending."

The rain was killing the last days of summer, you had been killing my last breath of love, since a long time ago. I still don't think I'm gonna make it through another love story. You took it all away from me. And there I stand, I knew I was going to be the one left behind. But still I'm watching the lake, vaguely conscious, and I know my life is ending.

Crossing the Bar

By Alfred Tennyson

And one clear call for me!

And may there be no moaning of the bar,

When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,

Too full for sound and foam,

When That which drew form out the boundless deep

Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,

And after that the dark!

And may there be no sadness of farewell,

When I embark;

For though from out our bourne of Time and Place

The flood may bear me far,

I hope to see my Pilot face to face

When I have crost the bar.

我将出海远航;

涛声似止,浪花息;

登舟起锚;

滔滔载我至远方;

Oh, Captain! My Captain!

By Walt Whitman

Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,

The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is worn,

The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,

While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;

But O heart! heart! heart!

O the bleeding drops of red!

Where on the deck my Captain lies,

Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;

Rise up--for you the flag is flung--for you the bugle trills,

For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths--for you the shores crowding,

For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;

Here, Captain! dear father!

This arm beneath your head;

It is some dream that on the deck

You've fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,

My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse or will;

The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;

From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;

Exult, O Shores! and ring, O bell!

But I, with mournful tread,

Walk the deck my Captain lies,

Fallen cold and dead.

啊, 船长!我的船长!可怕的航程已完成;

啊, 船长!我的船长!起来吧,倾听钟声;

起来吧,号角为您长鸣,旌旗为您高悬;

迎着您,多少花束花圈----候着您,千万人蜂拥岸边;

他们向您高呼,拥来挤去,仰起殷切的脸;

我的船长不作声,嘴唇惨白,毫不动弹;

我的父亲没感到我的手臂,没有脉搏,没有遗言;

船舶抛锚停下,平安抵达;航程终了;

To the Cuckoo

By William Wordsworth

O blithe new-comer! I have heard,

I hear thee and rejoice.

O Cuckoo! shall I call thee Bird,

Or but a wandering Voice?

While I am lying on the grass

Thy twofold shout I hear;

From hill to hill it seems to pass

At once far off, and near.

Though babbling only to the Vale,

Of sunshine and of flowers,

Thou bringest unto me a tale

Of visionary hours.

Thrice welcome, darling of the Spring!

Even ye thou art to me

No bird, but an invisible thing,

A voice a mystery;

The same whom in my schoolboy days

I listened to; that Cry

Which made me look a thousand ways

In bush, and tree, and sky.

To seek thee did I often rove

Through woods and on the green;

And thou wert still a hope, a love;

Still longed for, never seen.

And I can listen to thee yet;

Can lie upon the plain

And listen, till I do beget

That golden time again.

O blessed Bird! the earth we pace

Again appears to be

An unsubstantial, faery place;

That is fit home for thee!

听到你啭鸣,我满怀喜悦;

伴着繁华和阳光;

曾倾听同样的鸣声;

踩着草地,穿过密林;

又显得空灵而神奇;

Spring

By Thomas Nashe

Spring, the sweet spring, is the year's pleasant king;

Then blooms each thing, then maids dance in a ring,

Cold doth not sting, the pretty birds do sing,

Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

The palm and may make country houses gay,

Lambs frisk and play, the shepherds pipe all day,

And we hear aye birds tune this merry lay,

Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

The fields breathe sweet, the daisies kiss our feet,

Young lovers meet, old wives a sunning sit,

In every street these tunes our ears do greet,

Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

Spring! the sweet Spring!

On a Stair I Stood

Pierre de Ronsard

(English version by Humbert Wolfe)

Lately as dreaming on a stair I stood

you passed me by, and, by looking on my face,

blinded my eyes with the immediate grace

of unanticpated neighboourhood.

As lightning splits the clouds, my heart and blood

split with your beatuty, and began to race,

无与伦比的美丽击碎了我的心脏;

now ice, now fever, shattered in their place

by that unparelleled beatitutde.
