Today, I learned some short vowel sounds of "o" and "u". "O" is a back vowel pronounced with my mouth rounded and wide open, while "u" is a central vowel with my mouth opened much smaller.
The first short vowel sound that I learned was "o". It appears at the initial, medial positions in the American English words, for example, ox, pot, top, Bob, rod, Mom, rock. However, I found one exception where "o" isn't pronounced as an "o" sound, but an "aw" sound. That was "dog".
The second short vowel sound that I learned was "u", which also appears at the initial and medial positions in the American English words, for example, bug, sun, hut, tub, gun, tuck, jump, lunch.
"O" and "u" are all short vowels, which I learned for two hours to mimic the sound. To tell you the truth, the two sounds are really difficult.
